This lot is the earliest sampler from Ann Bowman Usher's (1723-1793) school. Samplers from this school are said to include birthdates of the maker and the town Bristol, but do not give a date of execution. Another characteristic is the alphabet with the letter V preceding U, as seen in the lower case alphabet.
Sarah Jenckes was born in Providence, Rhode Island on June 12, 1773 to Sylvanus and Freelove Jenckes. She married at age nineteen on November 17, 1772, to James Fenner, whose father Arthur Fenner was governor of Rhode Island from 1790 until 1805. Sarah and James had four children. She died on May 24, 1844.
