Cotton Appliqué Schoolhouse and Railroad Quilt

The top with stars and a moon in a blue field above houses, churches, etc., centering a railway.

The depiction of homes and buildings on quilts in appliqué was made by cutting and layering fabric shapes. The variations often included a one- or two-chimneyed house with gable roof, which could easily be converted into a church or home. The small geometric pieces of fabric were sewn together to create a quilt block. Often inspiration for the architectural elements was found in or could be ordered from ladies' magazines, newspapers, almanacs, needlework catalogues, etc. Additional information can be found in Harding and Fisher, Home Sweet Home: The House in American Folk Art.
