Faustina Maratta (circa 1679-1745) was born in Rome, the natural daughter of the artist Carlo Maratta, who saw to it that she received a good education in painting, music and poetry. Well-known both for her learning and her beauty as a young woman, she was attemptedly kidnapped by a local nobleman, but managed to escape, and her would-be abductor was forced to flee to Naples and later to Spain. Later, in 1705, she married the poet Giambattista Felice Zappi, and the couple's house in Rome became the meeting place of a distinguished literary circle.
