ZOLA, ÉMILE La Verite en Marche. L'Affaire Dreyfus.
Paris: Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1901. First edition, this a presentation copy from Zola to [Sir] Campbell Clarke, inscribed "á Campbell Clarke/son dévoué confrère/Emile Zola." Blue contemporary French quarter-calf with Campbell Clarke's initials at the foot of the spine, marbled sides, original yellow wrappers bound in. 6 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches (17.5 x 11 cm); [2] ff., iv, 314 pp. Light binding wear, paper browned as usual. With the bookplate of Sir Campbell Clarke.
An interesting association copy of Zola's collection of essays on the Dreyfus Affair. These were largely published in Le Figaro and L'Aurore between 1897 and 1900. His most famous essay, "J'Accuse!" essay, had originally been published on the front page of L'Aurore on 13 January 1898, and in it Zola provoked the government into suing him for libel. Alfred Dreyfus, whose cause Zola espoused, was Jewish and a convenient scapegoat. Dreyfus had been falsely accused and convicted of an act of treason, and sentenced to the infamous Devil's Island, while the perpetrator of the crime, the anti-Semite Marie Charles Esterhazy, was discreetly pensioned by the French Army and allowed to flee to England. The recipient of this copy, Sir Campbell Clarke, was a British journalist and author, well known and regarded in France, and an Officer of the French Legion of Honor.
