This first American edition was unauthorized, with the pirated text printed in Mexico and illegally distributed in the United States by Medusa Press. First published in 1934 by the Obelisk Press, Tropic of Cancer was banned in the U.S. and the subject of an obscenity lawsuit. The ban was lifted in 1961, and the first official American edition was published the same year by Grove Press, but this bootleg edition had already been in circulation for over 20 years. Signed copies of this illicit edition are desirable in any condition.
