Paris: Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1893. First edition, this a presentation copy from Zola to [Sir] Campbell Clarke, inscribed "á Campbell Clarke/son dévoué confrère/Emile Zola." Blue contemporary French quarter-calf with Campbell Clarke's initials at the foot of the spine, marbled sides, original yellow wrappers bound in. 6 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches (17.5 x 11 cm); [3] ff., 390 pp.; folding plate. Light binding wear, paper edge-toned. With the bookplate of Sir Campbell Clarke.
The twentieth and final volume of Zola's Rougon-Macquart sequence, in which he explored the nature of heredity (the Pascal, of the title, is a physician working in this field, using his own family as a case study). The recipient of this copy, Sir Campbell Clarke, was a British journalist and author, well known and regarded in France, and an Officer of the French Legion of Honor.
