BONAPARTE, JOSEPHINE Letter signed.
Paris: 4 Floreal, An 8 [23 April 1796]. Single-page manuscript letter in French in a secretarial hand signed "Lapagerie Bonaparte" [Josephine was born Maria Josephe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie], without salutation, with integral blank, the sheet 8 3/4 x 7 inches (22 x 18 cm). Folds, one original ink smudge, a few faint spots, fine overall.
At the time of this letter, Josephine had only been married to Napoleon for a matter of weeks. The letter, in rough translation, reports the location of a certain file to be examined by a commission, and that Josephine "is taking such interest in these poor orphans because I knew their mother very well and because the justice that is do to them sincerely makes me wish that Citizen Le Page employ everything in his power to speed up their case."
