26 August 1823. Single-page letter in a secretarial hand signed "J.C. Calhoun" to Richard Smith, Cashier of Deposits at Washington, regarding a miscarried "draft for $1000 in favor of Col. David Brearly late agent of the Cherokee Nation on the Arkansas", fine; Together with a framed document signed by Calhoun, 1819, document appointing a cadet in the service of the U.S., signed by Calhoun as Secretary of War, visible area, 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (17 x 22 cm); framed with a portrait.
