LEE, MARY ANNA CUSTIS Autograph letter signed.
[N.p. but Virginia:] Saturday, [5 May 1849]. Single-page letter signed "MlLee" on one sheet, with address panel in Mrs. Lee's hand and the dated docketting from the recipient referencing his reply (present, see note). The full sheet 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches (19.5 x 24.5 cm). Tissue backed closing a 1 inch tear from the lower margin but not touching text.
In this letter, Mary Custis Lee, granddaughter of Martha Washington and wife of Robert E. Lee, sends instructions to a Mr. Lloyd of Alexandria on precisely how to send money ($657.26). Her husband Robert is referenced three times in the letter: "Robert is anxious to have this money at once ... make the whole up in a small sealed & give to our servant you need not tell him what is, but tell him to be very careful & bring it up & deliver to me himself." Present is Lloyd's reply on a small square slip reporting the delivery of the money.
