Lot Details
Lot 19
Set of Eight Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver Placecard Holders
Late 20th century
Each with a pineapple clip on disk base. Height 1 1/8 inch, total approximately 5 ounces.
Pineapples have been a symbol of hospitality and wealth since Christopher Columbus first stumbled upon them in the Caribbean in 1493. The pineapple was the epitome of the strange fruit and fauna of the New World and a single pineapple could cost the equivalent of $8,000 today. By the 18th century, shops in London rented pineapples to clients as a more affordable display of wealth. A host who shared a pineapple with guests was the most hospitable friend one could ask for, and the pineapple as a symbol of hospitality continues to this day.
