Lot Details

Lot 23
Mexican Sterling Silver Serving Fork and Spoon
William Spratling, 1944-1946
Length 9 1/2 inches, total approximately 6 ounces.

William Spratling is known as one of the 20th century's great silversmiths. His shop in Taxco, Mexico was a hive of activity helping to train an entire generation of Mexican silversmiths. Spratling's most desirable works are those that look back to the pre-Colombian world for inspiration, like the servers offered here. When the Second World War closed European silver to American consumers, department stores and jewellers looked to Spratling to fill the void and an eager American public devoured the works.
