French Art Nouveau Silver and Parcel-Gilt Melon Server
Circa 1900
The shaped blade acid etched with tied floral band. Length 9 3/4 inches, approximately 3 ounces.
Melons were already being eaten in Europe by the Ancient Romans, but it was the 19th century that saw the vast wealth of the aristocracy and the growing middle class looking to emulate their habits create an explosion of silver serving pieces made to eat specific foods and courses. Beautiful silver pieces like this one can make a grand spectacle of the serving of anything.
