Lot 81
DOUBLEDAY, ABNER Reminiscences of Forts Sumter and Moultrie in 1860-'61.
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1876. First edition. Publisher's cloth. Frontispiece and map, 184 pp., 8 pp. ads at rear. One signature sprung towards end, the front pastedown cracked near corner where bent back, chips and small losses to spine tips and corners, light spotting.
Abner Doubleday fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the Civil War. His war memoir is somewhat rare: "This charming story, by a then-Captain of artillery inside the two forts, is a memoir of merit because of the aura of its immediacy and intimacy" (Nevins I, p. 27). Doubleday is often credited as the inventor of American baseball, a myth that has been debunked by historians.
