Lot Details

Lot 69
Russian Icon of Patriarch Hermogenes [Germogen
] of Moscow and All Russia
20th century
Rectangular, the figure realistically depicted standing before the Chudov Monastery, within a silk embroidered border, signed in Cyrillic Victor Vasnetsov and dated 1913 (lower left). Height overall 21 inches, width 15 3/4 inches.

Hermogenes or Germogen (circa 1530-1612) was the first Kazan metropolitan and was elected by the Council of Russian Hierarchs as Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia in 1606. Hermogenes was involved in many important events of the early 17th century, and he had a significant impact on the course of Russian history during the Time of Troubles.
The glorification of the saint as holy martyr took place in 1913, the year of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. The iconographic source for the present lot is the icon painted by Victor Vasnetsov that same year. Vasnetsov's depiction of the saint enjoyed tremendous popularity, and it was widely reproduced.
