[BARNARD, GEORGE] attrib. (1819-1902) [General George H. Thomas and his Staff at Point Lookout,
1863. Albumen print on gray card mount, 10 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches (272 x 217 mm), unsigned. Generally good tones, some minor chipping to corners of mount, pencil notes on mount recto identifying some of the figures. Framed.
Here, General Thomas, "The Rock of Chickamauga" and his staff stand atop a literal rock, Point Lookout on Lookout Mountain, in the aftermath of the Battle of Lookout Mountain, November 24, 1863, during Sherman's Chattanooga campaign. Barnard accompanied Sherman's troops, and this image is generally attributed to him. General J. H. King stands to Thomas's right, looking at the camera; Generals Tower, Donaldson and Brannon and others stand to his left.
