Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, [2000]. Number 12 of 500 copies on handmade paper. Afterword by Matthew J. Bruccoli. Facsimile of galley proofs on long sheets laid-into card case as issued, housed in original cardboard shipping container. 24 x 6 inches. Fine.
Fitzgerald was ambivalent about the the title of The Great Gatsby and went through several working titles, including Trimalchio and Trimalchio in West Egg, referring to the character in Satyricon. Fitzgerald compares Gatsby to Trimalchio in the opening lines of chapter 7: "It was when curiosity about Gatsby was at its highest that the lights in his house failed to go on one Saturday night - and, as obscurely as it had begun, his career as Trimalchio was over." Includes one Dorothea Benton Frank library bookplate.
