EMERSON, RALPH WALDO Essays.
Boston: James Munroe and Company, 1841 . First edition, this a presentation copy to Emerson's cousin "Thomas W. Haskins/from his affectionate cousin/R.W. Emerson/Apr. 1841,"in Emerson's hand on the half-title. Publisher's ribbed purple-brown cloth, the binding BAL C (though the binding sequence is arbitrary, according to BAL), housed in a chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. 7 1/8 x 4 3/8 inches (18 x 11 cm); vi, 303, [1] pp. The binding with some spotting and soiling, showing evidence of restoration, including a small section at the head of the spine. Internally, minor foxing throughout, most notably to the preliminaries, but in all a sound copy. Later ownership, dated 1855, of George B. Haskins on the first blank.
An Emerson family copy of the first edition of the Essays. The recipient was Thomas Waldo Haskins, a Boston merchant, who was then 40 years old. BAL 5189.
