S. edition, with the title-page reset, the first issue: contains the list of other "Works" by Maugham facing half-title, together with the publisher's ad page for works by other authors on half-title verso, with the misprint on page 257, line 4 ("help" for "helped"), and with the 16 pp. of inserted ads at rear. This copy is inscribed "For Dwyer[?] Evans/his friend the author/W. Somerset Maugham." Publisher's dark blue cloth in chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches (19 x 12.25); [viii], 648 pp., 16 pp. ads. Offset to inscribed leaf, binding somewhat soiled and rubbed with some areas of cloth paler, hinges separating at endpapers. Bookplate of Duncan Crawford.
The first English edition was preceded by the American.
