[AFRICA-HUNTING] [HUNTER, JOHN ALEXANDER]. Manuscript account of safaris taken in 1928 and 1929, with leaders including J.A. Hunter (the noted big-game hunter and author) and Andrew Fowle, another noteworthy hunter of the day.
Three-quarters leather notebook, moire cloth sides. 9 x 6 7/8 inches (22.5 x 17.5 cm); 67 completed pp. on ruled paper (the bulk of the volume uncompleted or with unrelated entries in a childish hand); with 48 mounted gelatin silver prints including three identified by the writer as of John Alexander Hunter (and more unidentified that appear to be of him) and one labelled as being Andrew Fowle; additionally there are several carefully drawn diagrams of hunts. The binding somewhat worn, Some offsetting to the text from the adhesive used to mount the photographs.
An extremely interesting account of safaris in Africa by an (unfortunately) unidentified writer, with images of John Hunter, the author of the classic White Hunter and other big-game narratives. The writer's 1928 safari season began with arrival at Mombasa on the S.S. Guildford Castle on March 3, and he started hunting a few days later, taking a wide range of game, frequently with John Hunter "Got rather wind up & told Hunter to open fire as rifle had jammed" (p. 8). There are two photographs of Hunter with a lion he had killed on p. 16, and the account of the kill on the previous page. The author appears to have left Africa at the end of May, and to have returned to Mombasa in January of 1929, again hunting with John Hunter (see pp. 53-4), then for rhino with Fowle. The hunting was briefly interrupted by a bout of African tick typhus, but was resumed on March 19th. After hunting hippo he left Africa on April 1.
