Cincinnati and New York: J. R. Hawley & Co., 1865. First edition. Modern three-quarters navy morocco gilt. 8 x 5 1/4 inches; frontispiece, 24 plates, [i]-x, 19-394 pp. Some wear to frontis, light spotting throughout, faint ink numerals to foot of dedication, a sound copy attractively rebound.
One of few surviving copies of this book, the balance were destroyed in the fire at Pike's Opera House in Cincinnati. Many surviving copies were subjected to a great deal of heat, and many of the extant copies are found rebound, as here. "This is the narrative of an intrepid Ohio soldier, and illustrates a phase of army life that is as sensational and dangerous as it is useful and necessary. The reliability of the author's statements and service is certified to by the officers under whose orders he acted" (Ryan).
