Lot 139
[ASIA-HUNTING] CUMBERLAND, CHARLES SPERLING. Sport on the Pamirs and Turkistan Steppes.
London: William Blackwood, 1895. First edition. Publishers red cloth cover with gilt vignette. 8 x 5 1/2 inches (20 x 14 cm); x, 278 pages, [2], 32 page publishers catalogue; frontispiece, folding map. Minor cover soil and wear, non-authorial inscription on half-title, a tight copy and attractive overall.
'The author hunted a variety of game including ibex in the Kobrang Valley, burhel near Gangootri, and markhor in the Pir Panjal. After crossing the Yarkand River and entering the shooting grounds of Turkestan, he stalked Ovis poli with varying degrees of success. He notes: "As a gambler lays his all on the throw of the dice, so does a hunter stake his hopes for the future, always with the firm belief that the next move will be the lucky one." After a return to Yarkand for refitting, he departed for Aksak Maral where he hunted jeran deer. Entering the Tian Shan on the road to Kashgar, he bagged additional Ovis poli. This is a well-written work with excellent hunting descriptions." Czech Asia p. 55.
