[ALBANIA-HUNTING] KAVANAGH, ARTHUR. The Cruise of the R.Y.S. Eva.
Dublin: Hodges, Smith and Co., 1865. First edition. publisher's blue cloth with the yacht in gilt on the upper cover. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches (22.5 x 14 cm); xii, 218 pp.; 16 lithotint plates. Binding quite worn and rubbed, wear to extremities of spine, paper a bit toned. Early non-authorial inscription on endpaper, bookplate of Robert Sturtevant Bassett.
A rather scarce work illustrated with attractive plates after Kavanaugh's photographs (with the exception of the first plate, which is after a photograph by another hand). The last copy we note sold in 2010 (Bloomsbury Auction). Kavanaugh was born into substantial wealth, but suffered a birth defect that left him essentially limbless, with only rudimentary stumps of arms and legs. Despite this, thanks to a sympathetic physician, he started riding at the age of three, and was an active sportsman, living an extremely full life (including spending two weeks in a harem)! He inherited the family estate in 1851, and later became an M.P. This journey, on a yacht named for his youngest daughter, was a shooting cruise off the coast of Albania.
C Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson
