New York: Printed by Tiebout & O'Brien for Benjamin Gomez, 1796. First expanded American edition. 4 volumes. Contemporary tree calf rebacked in period style retaining original black morocco lettering labels, endpapers and blanks but without half-titles if issued. 8 x 4 3/4 inches (20 x 12 cm); xii, xxxiv, 370 pp.; xii, 359 pp.; xi, 400 pp.; xii, 310, [1], 40, [8] pp. With 48 engraved plates, one more than called for in the plate list, including the folding chart of Karakooa Bay and the Sandwich Islands and the folding Death of Captain Cook plate. Spotting and foxing which is heavy at places and some offset from plates, folding map with long tear from mount and a few plates trimmed close, bookplates of the New Jersey Historical Society with their very faint embossed stamp to titles and at least once elsewhere within each volume, small ink withdrawal stamps to verso, contemporary ink ownership signature "Stephen Cooper" to titles.
This is the first expanded edition of Cook printed in America, preceded by a single volume edition in 1783 and an abridged edition in 1792. In edition to the expanded text which includes the Life of Captain James Cook at the end of volume IV, this edition reproduces the plates from the folio atlas of the 1784 English edition rendering it one of the finest illustrated travel books printed in 18th century America.
