[CREPE PAPER] HEARN, LAFCADIO-TRANS. Japanese Fairy Tale Series
. (Tokyo): T. Hasegawa, n.d. (circa 1931?), distributed by the Macrae-Smith Company of Philadelpia. Five crepe-paper books in original wrappers, housed in a the American publisher's wrap-around case with bone ties in the Japanese manner. 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches (19.5 x 13.5 cm); various paginations, illustrated throughout. The slipcase worn, faded and rebacked, the volumes clean and bright.
The titles, all translated by Hearn into English, include The Boy who Drew Cats; The Goblin Spider; The Old Woman who Lost her Dumpling; Chin-chin Kobakama; and The Fountain of Youth. The creping process was used by Hasegawa (and a few other Japanese publishers to provide a novel effect to woodblock printing, providing a flexible page with intensified color. Originally issued at the turn of the century, the present issue was printed by Hasegawa (the original publisher) from the original blocks in about 1931. It is a tour de force of book illustration.
