Two volumes, contemporary half calf, marbled paper over boards, spine titled and decorated in gilt, all edges marbled. 13 1/4 x 11 inches (34 x 27.5 cm); vi, 15, [1], xlv, [1], 375, [1] pp.; [2], 511, [1], 4 pp.; vol. I with frontispiece, 5 plates, and in-text illustrations; vol. 2 with 10 plates, 1 folding plate and in-text illustrations. Wear to bindings, with upper hinge of volume 1 and rear hinge of volume 2 cracked, occasional light toning and spotting to contents, short tear along fold of folding plate, old ownership inscriptions to endpapers.
A luxuriously printed and illustrated biography of Britain's greatest naval hero, Lord Horatio Nelson, published four years after his death at the Battle of Trafalgar. "Clarke and McArthur were responsible for creating more myths about Nelson than any other authors" (Roger Knight).
