Wedgwood Encaustic Black Basaltes 'Commemorative' Two-Handled Urn and Cover
Dated 1788, impressed uppercase mark
After the Antique kantharos form, the shield-shape vessel with tall upright strap handles, painted in iron-red and white with two Homeric figures in the red Attic figure painting style, the obverse inscribed and dated `W.M. Moseley / 1788' within an elaborate foliate scroll cartouche, the flat cover with broad cylindrical finial, decorated with a border of acanthus leaves and geometric patterned bands, the socle foot with stiff leaf-tips.
Height 9 3/4 inches.
