[Florence:] Privately Printed [Tipografia Giuntina], 1928. First edition, number 859 of 1000 copies signed by Lawrence. Original boards stamped with Lawrence's phoenix insignia on the upper board, printed paper spine label. 9 x 6 inches; 365 pp. The spine nearly detached from the backstrip and with losses to foot and label, shelfwear to extremities, spotting throughout, a pencil signature dated 1932 at front.
One of the most controversial novels of the 20th century, Lady Chatterley's Lover was banned in most countries forcing Lawrence to travel to Florence to publish the book himself. It would not be published in England until 1960. Roberts A42a.
