Garden City: Doubleday, 1949. First trade edition, inscribed under the title on the half-title "by W. Somerset Maugham/For Bill Safire/in recollection of a pleasant chat." Custom three-quarters morocco gilt with the initials "W.L.S." to a corner of the upper cover, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches; frontispiece portrait, 367 pp. A touch of discolor to the spine tips, otherwise fine, with the booklabel of William Safire.

Inscribed from one wordsmith to another, Maugham's A Writer's Notebook "shows him at his best, as detached, observant, and affecting a pose of worldliness even in his apparent private thoughts" (Drabble 631).
