DE PEYSTER FAMILY Manuscript Family Tree and Coat of Arms of the De Peyster family.
[New York:] circa 1725 or later. An ink manuscript on a large sheet of watermarked laid-paper, 13 x 16 inches (33 x 40 cm), silked on verso with small losses along folds and at the center fold point affecting some text; The Coat of Arms ink on watermarked laid-paper, with "Family Arms of Depeyster" next to the drawing, 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches (16 x 16 cm), folds strengthened.

Two interesting early manuscripts offering insight to this important early New York family. At the center of the family tree is notation that "Johannes de Peyster and Cornelia Lubberts both born at Harlem were married 17 December 1651 and had issue." The circular chart expands listing their eight children, five of which survived to adulthood and were married. The most notable was their third child Abraham, born in America in 1657 but married in Amsterdam in 1684 and later mayor of New York City. His wife Catherine de Peyster bore 13 children between 1685 and 1709, five of which appear to have survived according to the chart (infant or childhood deaths are marked with an x). Seventh born Johannes de Peyster was also mayor of New York City, and had 12 children with his wife Anna Bancker, nine of which appear to have survived. The latest birth listed on the chart is Sarah, daughter of Cornelius de Peyster born in May 1725.

The manuscript coat of arms appears to be slightly later than the family tree but still 18th century. The coat of arms depicts four sheep under a tree in a pasture and the drawing indicates the colors for each area perhaps as preparatory for a painting or color manuscript. We note an oil on cloth paintings of the De Peyster Family Coat of Arms in the collection of the New York Historical Society, donated by Catharine Augusta De Peyster in 1911.
