KENNEDY, JOHN FITZGERALD Document signed as President.
Washington: 12 May 1962. Printed document with wafer seal accomplished in manuscript appointing Morris S. Novik Member of the United States Advisory Commission on Information, signed in ink at lower right "John Kennedy" and countersigned by Dean Rusk as Secretary of State. 16 x 20 inches (40.5 x 51 cm). Toned with a few slightly uneven areas in the upper section, acquired from Lion Heart Autographs, New York, in 1997.
Morris S. Novik (1903-1996) was a radio pioneer who is credited with seeing in the 1920s the potential radio could bring to public service, education, and emerging labor movements. In the late 1930s, New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia recruited Novik to head the public radio station WNYC, and Novik is said to have coined the term "public broadcasting." Following World War II, President Truman appointed Novik to an advisory commission on establishing new communications in Europe. In 1962, he was appointed by President Kennedy to the Advisory Commission on Information and is here reappointed by President Johnson in 1965 (see previous lot).
