Den Haag [The Hague]: A. de Hondt, 1700. Disbound (likely from a larger compilation), in old tissue wraps. First Dutch edition. 8 x 6 3/4 inches (20 x 17 cm); [4]-88 pp., with an engraved single-page map and four plates (two folding) of native life. Laid-in is a copy of Tirion's 1765 folding map of the region. Some staining, one plate with a restoration to the fold.
Wafer voyaged with Dampier, and was marooned on the Isthmus for four years. He was hired as an adviser on the Darien scheme by William Paterson. The original English edition appeared in 1699; the present translation into Dutch was made by William Sewel, the noted Anglo-Dutch quaker and author of The History of the Rise, Increase, and Progress of the Christian People called Quakers (an edition of which was published by Benjamin Franklin). This work contains "the earliest clear account of the use of a primitive ceremonial cigar." c.f. Arents III, 438, referencing the English edition.
