Contemporary calf, gilt armorial stamp to boards, edges sprinkled red. 6 x 3 1/2 inches; [12], 210, [28] pp. Binding heavily worn with the spine perished, arms on front cover excised exposing the board, the half title detatched and the last gathering sprung, old ownership signature in pen on title, sold with all faults.
An early modern treatise on books and libraries, explaining their history and uses. Le Gallois' begins with a history of ancient texts and libraries, from Hebrew to Egyptian to early Christian. This is followed by a overview of important contemporary collections in Europe, ending with a chapter on non-European libraries in the Far and Middle East. He then gives a history of the printing press and early printing, a chapter on textual transmission, and ends with a dissertation how to build and organize a library.
