Lot Details

Lot 203
FROST, ROBERT A Boy's Will.
London: David Nutt, 1913. First edition, second issue ("Printed in Great Britain" stamped on title verso), in publisher's wrappers (binding "C"), i.e. one of 100 copies thus for Simkin Marshall, this copy signed and annotated "For Beatrice Grover" on the title-page. Cream linen-textured paper wrappers, imprinted in black with title, author and small eight-petalled floral ornaments. 7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches (18.5 x 12 cm); xii, 50, [2] pp. Upper edge of covers toned, minor soiling and very light wear, in all a sound copy.

This is Frost's second-published work (after the unprocurable Twilight, issued in two copies), and first collection of poetry. The publishing history is slightly complex. A thousand copies were printed, but of these, Nutt bound up fewer than 350 (before 1921). These appear in two bindings, the original cloth (binding A), and--during World War I--cream wrappers (binding B). After Nutt's 1921 bankruptcy, Frost purchased the remainder of the unbound sheets. Of these, 100 copies were bound in wrappers for the English publisher Simpkin Marshall (binding C, the present issue), and the remainder of the copies were sent to the Dunster House Bookshop in Cambridge, Mass., who put them in similar wrappers (binding D, differing in the number of petals in the ornament). Crane 2.
