First edition, first printing, with a fine inscription "To Erie Volkert/in appreciation of his/producing and his acting/I don't know which to praise/more./Robert Frost/ August 6 1948/Theatre of Bread Loaf", this Volkert's acting copy with his extensive annotations including stage directions, exegetic notes, etc. Publisher's blue cloth in dust jacket. 8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches (21.25 x 14 cm); vi, 39, [1] pp. Jacket faded on spine, cloth a bit worn, a bit shaken, and heavily annotated in pencil, pen and crayon by Volkert (and possibly other hands).
Erie Volkert, the recipient of this copy, was a Middlebury College Professor of Drama from 1941 to 1976, and directed Frost's A Masque of Mercy as part of the Bread Loaf theater program in what is likely to have been the first public performance of Frost's play.
