Lot Details

Lot 281
GROSZ, GEORGE Ecce Homo.
Berlin: Malik Verlag, 1923. Ausgabe "C" of the first edition (approximately 6,000-8,000 copies). Original printed wrappers. 14 x 10 1/2 inches (35.5 x 27 cm); title, (verso plate list), list of aquarelles, 100 offset lithographic plates, including 16 in color. Wrappers somewhat worn at fore-edge, toned. Bookplate of William P. Moor.
A fierce attack on the supposed rectitude of upper-class German life after the First World War, which resulted in the prosecution of Grosz for "offences against public morality and for besmirching the values of the German people" (Kranzfelder, 59). The German Army demanded the removal of 5 color plates and 17 black and white plates from the portfolio in a successful lawsuit, declaring them a slanderous attack, resulting in the destruction of many copies.
