In 1640 Andrea Sacchi received a commission from the Jesuit Order for a large painting to commemorate the festivities at the church of the Gesu in Rome to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their founding. This drawing, whose subject was identified by Anne Sutherland Harris, is a study for the central group of figures in the painting. Here the Jesuit Father General and other members of the order, are shown kneeling before Pope Urban VIII and his cardinal nephews.
