ARBUS, DIANE (1923-1971) Four photographs of the children of Konrad and Gay Matthaei, December, 1969.
Comprising: Marcella Matthaei, standing, age 11; Leslie; Marcella and Leslie; and Konrad. Four gelatin silver prints, printed by Amy Arbus, 1990, the versos with the "Print by Diane Arbus/Printed by Amy Arbus" stamp. Each about 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (24 x 24 cm); framed separately.
The commissioned portraits of the Matthaei family were part of the travelling exhibition Diane Arbus: Family Albums in 2004, which prominently featured this compelling portrait of Marcella on its front cover. In her final years Arbus was interested in exploring the concept of family, and the shoot commissioned by Humphrey Matthaei clearly intrigued her. The Amy Arbus printing was commissioned by Marcella herself.
