Lot Details

Lot 30
CALLAHAN, HARRY (1912-1999) [Torn Sign, Detroit],
[1946], likely printed 1960s. Gelatin silver print, 9 5/8 x 7 5/8 inches (200 x 245 mm) on slightly larger sheet with plateholder borders, signed recto in stylus (l.r.) "Harry Callahan," and signed again in ink ("H. Callahan") on verso. No defects noted in raking light. Some fluorescence noted. Framed.
Taken with Callahan's 8-by-10-inch view camera, and rendered as a contact print, this is some of Callahan's earliest work in abstraction, influenced by a visit to a Stuart Davis retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. With Pace Macgill Gallery, with their label on the back board.

C Estate of Herbert Kasper
