STEINER, RALPH (1899-1986)
[Clotheslines], [1925], likely printed 1920s. Vintage gelatin silver contact print, 4 3/4 x 3 5/8 inches (121 by 92 mm), image within thin plateholder and black ink margins, dry mounted by Steiner to thin cream card, signed in pencil on mount "Ralph Steiner," and with Steiner's name and address "350 1/2 West 24 Street" written on mount verso in pencil. Image with very minor wear to edges of border, mount toned, some minor soiling and staining, and a little chipped.
Most commonly encountered in Steiner's retrospective portfolio Twenty-two Little Contact Prints from 1921-1929 Negatives, this is among Steiner's finest images, and early prints such as this are rare. Of this image he wrote later "The occupants of these tenements had the Third Avenue El roaring past their front rooms and these rhythmic clotheslines across their rear rooms. I hope at least one housewife got pleasure from the Johann Sebastian clothesline harmonies."
