Norwich [CT]: Press of the Bulletin Company, 1881. First edition. Original gilt lettered pebbled cloth. 7 1/2 x 5 inches (18 x 12 cm); portrait frontispiece, 150 pp. A few minor spots to covers and within, the front hinge cracking, a very fine copy overall.

Rare autobiography describing Smith's life as a slave in Virginia, his escape north 1838, and life as a freeman, Methodist minister and shoemaker in Norwich, Connecticut. Blockson 9202; HSP/LCP Afro-Americana Catalog 9524.
