[ILLUSTRATION ART] EDWARD GOREY. The Happy Ending [from National Lampoon, March, 1973].
Ink and watercolor on thin white illustration board affixed to a gray card backing, signed in graphite in the margin (lr), overall 12 x 9 3/8 inches (30.5 x 23.75 cm), the illustration 10 x 7 3/8 inches (25.5 x 18 cm); the "cover" design for the National Lampoon Gorey section featured in the March 1973 issue, which consisted of this drawing presented full-page, followed by twelve individual spot illustrations collected onto four pages. The illustration board is starting to lift from the backing, but in all the drawing is in fine condition.
The Gorey "Happy Endings" special for the magazine has long been a desideratum for collectors, with its quirky drawings with titles for such dubiously joyous endings as "One by one, the stars came out around the gasometer"; "Tomorrow she would make pea soup with the ham bone"; and "There was Doubt in the Mind of Royalty, and Wilfrid's sentence was commuted to Penal Servitude for Life." The work was never published (other than the appearance of three of the drawings in F.M.R.A..
