Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1861. Publisher's blind stamped bubble-pattern dark blue cloth, spine titled and decorated in silver. 5 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches, 450 pp., folded frontispiece engraving, folded plates, illustrations in text, 6 pp. of ads for military books at rear. Very minor bump to lower edge and corner, spine lean, contents with occasional spots, frontispiece creased, a remarkably well-preserved example, especially the publisher's binding.

An American infantry training manual published at the outset of the Civil War, profusely illustrated with diagrams of company and battalion movements, as well as troop stances.
