[CIVIL WAR--PRISONS] GOSS, WARREN LEE. The Soldier's Story of his Captivity at Andersonville, Belle Isle, and Other Rebel Prisons.
Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1868. Likely a presentation copy or deluxe issue in full decorated gilt stamped morocco with all edges gilt and with a mounted original albumen portrait signed in ink by the author opposite the title. 8 x 5 1/4 inches (20 x 14 cm); 274 pp., [6] ads, 4 wood engraved plates after Thomas Nast under tissue guards, signed photographic frontispiece. The binding extremities rubbed with a short split to the lower joint, the hinges cracking, faint minor dampstain to upper corner and other stray stains, wear to the final leaf of the introduction, label removed from the rear pastedowns.
Goss' agonizing memoir of Confederate prisons, first issued to subscribers in 1866 and in a larger edition in 1867. Present here is the 1868 edition in a deluxe binding and with a signed portrait of the author. This binding repeats the decorative spine lettering and illustration depicting Goss behind bars found on the typical cloth binding. The plates are by Thomas Nast who toured the south covering the war for Harper's Weekly. Warren Lee Goss was a volunteer in the 2nd Massachusetts who, once captured, spent significant time at Libby Prison, Andersonville and Belle Isle. His memoir contains "much useful data on the daily life and officials at such prisons as Charleston and Florence; very bitter against Confederates" - Nevins I, p.192; Sabin 28057.
