This is the map volume only from Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, Including a Reconnaissance of a New Route Through the Rocky Mountains, 1852. Original black cloth lettered in gilt and stamped in blind. 9 1/2 x 6 inches (24 x 15 cm); containing two large folding maps, partially hand-colored. The cloth with small losses to spine, the maps with spotting at mount and folds, a few short tears or small punctures at fold points, generally fine examples.
These are the very fine and large maps that accompanied Stansbury's report of his explorations of the Great Basin and the Great Salt Lake. The maps are considered landmarks of Western cartography. The maps are: Map of the Great Salt Lake and Adjacent Country in the Territory of Utah. Surveyed in 1849 and 1850, opening to about 45 x 31 1/2 inches; and Map of a Reconnaissance between Fort Leavenworth on the Missouri River and the Great Salt Lake of Utah, opening to about 69 x 31 inches.
