[MAP--INDIAN OCEAN] JANSSON, JAN. Erythraei Sive Rubri Maris Periplus Olim Ab Arraino Descriptus Nunc Vero Ab Ortelio Ex Eodem Delineatus.
Amsterdam: Joannis Jansonii, [circa 1658]. Engraved map with hand color, central fold, framed. 15 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches (39.75 x 46 cm.) to the neatline. Light toning, spotting, and a soft crease near the central fold caused by the guard on verso, not examined out of frame.
Jansson's map shows the Indian Ocean, centered on the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, as it was in antiquity. It covers the land from Egypt and East Africa, past Arabia and India, and over to the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Java. The two smaller maps in the upper corners show Northwestern Africa and the Arctic (here shown with a Northwest Passage), referencing both real and hypothetical routes from Europe to Asia. This map was based on one published in 1597 by Abraham Ortelius in his atlas of the ancient world, Parergon. Jansson's version, offered here, was included in the ancient world volume of his Atlas Novus. Provenance: Francis J. Manasek, 1999.
