Lot Details

Lot 156
[NATURAL HISTORY] GOODALL, W.[ILLIAM]. Group of six ornithological studies.
Includes the purple-capped parakeet; the cardinal; the black-capped kingfisher; the Indian lory; the mountain sparrow; and the willow wren. 12 5/8 x 7 7/8 inches (32.5 x 20 cm); watercolor and ink on five sheets of laid paper by various manufacturers, the watermarks (where present) dated 1791-1814, each captioned (as is typical for the artist) with the Linnean classifications, locales, sources etc. in a neat hand of the period, and signed W. Goodall. Minor toning, near fine.

William Goodall (1757-1844), who was educated at Eton and Cambridge, entered the Church and was ordained in 1781. In 1788 he married a wealthy heiress, Rebecca, the daughter of Sir John Van Hatten of Dinton Hall, Buckinghamshire, and thereafter lived the life of a country gentleman, serving as Lord of the Manor and a J.P. He was deeply interested in natural history, and prepared a vast corpus (some 50 volumes of more than a hundred watercolors) of careful copies from standard sources (as well as some original studies; these are normally marked with an asterisk). See Locke, M. and Collins, J.V. (2001) "Who was W. Goodall?" In: The Linnean; Newsletter and Proceedings of The Linnean Society of London, 17: 28-47.
