Lot Details

Lot 171
[ROGERS, BRUCE] [Lawrence, T. E.-translator]. The Odyssey of Homer.
[London]: printed and published by Sir Emery Walker, Wilfred Merton, and Bruce Rogers, [1932]. First edition of the Lawrence translation, one of 530 copies. Plain full black niger morocco, raised bands on spine, titled in gilt in first compartment, in the publisher's card slipcase. 11 1/2 x 8 inches (29 x 20.5 cm); unpaginated, printed on pale grey paper; with 25 rondels after Homeric figures from Greek vases; these printed in gold and black (one on the title-leaf, and at the head of each chapter heading). The binding sound, and with little or none of the rubbing that usually afflicts this work, the slipcase with some wear, with some cracking along the upper panel. One page with a small mark from what appears to be the balsam used in the gilt designs, in all a fine example.

An exquisitely produced book, printed in Rogers's 16 point Monotype Centaur. Lawrence's Translator's Note is appended to the translation. Blumenthal Bruce Rogers p. 128.
