Lot Details

Lot 217
A Chinese Molded Sancai Pottery Jar with Florets
Tang Dynasty
The exterior of the jar which rises from a splayed foot to a bulbous bowl shape then to a round mildly everted mouth rim is covered with two molded staggered rows of eight florets beneath the rim and eight stylized fleur-de-lis medallions around the jar's waist, all splashed with sancai glazes of light and darker browns, greens and cream, the glazes falling over the mouth rim and pooling irregularly stopping well before the splayed foot and leaving the white slip exposed except for two streams of green glaze on either side of the jar that run over the white slip and onto the foot rim, the base unglazed. Diameter 5 inches.

Provenance:
The Estate of Senator Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania, also an avid Chinese art collector and scholar (1900-1994).

Note:
Tang sancai jars and bowls with sixteen molded florals and other decorations are very rare. For an example of a Tang sancai bowl with 8 florets beneath the rim and with eight molded central stylized flowerheads, see Sotheby's New York 11 September 2019, lot 707 (Realized price USD 30,000). For a rare finely-molded sancai-glazed tripod jar and cover of similar color as the one offered here, see Christies New York 9 September 2020, lot 1802 (Realized price USD 62,500).
