Lot 251
Jackie Curtis Original 1968 poster for Glamour Glory and Gold. The Life & Legend of Nola Noonan, Goddess & Star.
New York: circa July 1968. Offset poster for the performances beginning on 24 July 1968 at the Playwright's Workshop, 14 Waverly Place, New York City. 22 x 16 1/2 inches (56 x 42 cm). Lightly toned, else fine.

In late 1967, 19 year old Jackie Curtis' play Glamour Glory and Gold opened at the at the Playwright's Workshop Club at the Bastiano Cellar Studio. The play told the Hollywood story of Nola Noonan, often compared to Jean Harlow. Sold out and subject of many rave reviews, beyond Curtis the first cast included Candy Darling, of whom the New York Times reviewer wrote "A skinny actress billed as Candy Darling also makes an impression. Hers was the first impersonation of a female impersonator I have ever seen." This is a poster for the second run of performances commencing in the summer of 1968 and features entirely new art. The second run featured both Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis, as noted on the poster, but also a young Robert De Niro. While De Niro did not run with a Warhol crowd, he auditioned anyway, suggesting the posters could be printed for free by his mother, and he was awarded all ten male roles in the show. For his performance, De Niro received the first positive reviews of his career, with the Village Voice writing: "De Niro made clean, distinct character statements in a series of parts which many actors would have fused into a general mush. De Niro is new on the scene and deserves to be welcomed." The poster is scarce and is an early highlight in the trailblazing career of Jackie Curtis.
