Lot 36
[BALLOONING] Ordonnance de l'Empereur concernant les ballons ou machines aérostatiques à feu, nommées Mongolfieres.
Mons: M. J. Wilmet, 7 June 1786. Printed order on a bifolium, decorative typographic headpiece with imperial Hapsburg arms, watermark of crown over interlocked "C"s and inverted anchor. 14 1/2 x 9 inches (36 x 22 cm). Light spotting and dust soiling to edges, small pin holes at top and bottom of sheet.

A rare Belgian broadside order issued by the Hapsburg emperor Joseph II banning the construction and ascent of hot air balloons, declaring that all liability from damage caused by balloon crashes would fall on the aeronauts. The major concern behind this decree was that the balloons' burners might cause a fire. We locate institutional examples at the KBR and the Huntington Library.
